This course enables students to continue to develop and consolidate the foundational knowledge and skills that they need for reading, writing, and oral and visual communication. Throughout the course, students continue to enhance media literacy and critical literacy skills and to develop and apply transferable skills, including digital literacy. Students make connections to their lived experiences and to society and increase their understanding of the importance of language and literacy across the curriculum.
COLA is not currently authorized to grant, guarantee or record OSSD credits. No credit result will be reported unless and until written credit-granting authority is received and the required student-record arrangements are in place.

Instructional format
COLA provides teacher-led, primarily asynchronous online instruction through Google Classroom. Students receive sequenced lessons, teacher direction, guided activities, feedback, individual support and opportunities for conferences or oral verification. Students may complete assigned asynchronous work flexibly within communicated weekly timelines. Short teacher-recorded mini-lessons are used when they add instructional value; teacher-directed slides, written instruction, modelled examples and guided practice may be used for other lessons.
Minimum scheduled instructional time
110 scheduled instructional hours: 108 instructional hours across 18 instructional weeks plus a two-hour written final examination. Homework beyond the approved instructional plan and idle login time are not counted.
Attendance & participation
Attendance is based on documented meaningful participation in scheduled learning, not login alone. Evidence may include completion of posted instruction, submissions, discussions, individual conferences, oral checkpoints, learning logs, feedback and revision, and substantive teacher communication. Excused absences do not automatically reduce the attendance/participation mark; reasonable recovery opportunities are provided.
2026–27 final-mark calculation
65% coursework, 20% securely administered written final examination, and 15% attendance and participation. After Ministry authorization, a minimum final mark of 50% is required to earn the credit. The Principal reviews curriculum coverage, grades, attendance, authentication, and final-examination evidence before any result is reported.
Mandatory final evaluation
A two-hour securely administered written final examination worth 20% of the final mark.
Exam delivery & integrity
The written examination is administered securely online with identity verification, controlled access, academic-integrity procedures, process and version evidence, and conferences or oral verification where appropriate. Documented accommodations are provided without lowering curriculum expectations.
Required technology
A current browser-capable computer, reliable internet, a camera and microphone when required, an individually verified Google account, and document or PDF tools. No public Google Classroom join code is used.
Teacher-support model
Every ENL1W learner completes the full Ontario Grade 9 de-streamed English expectations. Individual diagnostics determine instructional starting points, literacy supports, accommodations, appropriate scaffolding and opening-unit goals. Accommodations do not lower curriculum expectations. Sarah Abbas provides principal and teacher support from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on normal school days; students may complete asynchronous work outside that window.
Tuition
The initial inspection cohort is tuition-free. Any future tuition would apply only to later enrolments after Ministry authorization.
Withdrawal rules
Course changes or withdrawals must be requested in writing. Any academic and records consequences are documented separately from future pricing or refund terms.
