Authorization status: Canadian Online Learning Academy has submitted a Notice of Intention to Operate and is completing the required Ontario Ministry of Education registration and inspection process. COLA is not currently authorized to grant, guarantee or record OSSD credits. No credit result will be reported before written authorization and the required records arrangements are complete.

School organization

COLA is online-only and delivers teacher-led, primarily asynchronous Ontario curriculum courses through Google Classroom. Sarah Abbas provides principal and teacher support from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time on normal school days. Students may complete assigned asynchronous work outside that window and are not expected to remain online continuously during business hours.

Both courses have no prerequisite. No other course is part of the focused launch offering. Additional courses may be developed in the future after complete course development, appropriate staffing and applicable Ministry requirements.

Instructional-time plans

ENL1W

110 scheduled hours

108 instructional hours across 18 instructional weeks plus a two-hour securely administered written final examination. Homework beyond the approved plan and idle login time are excluded.

CHV2O

55 scheduled hours

54 instructional hours across nine instructional weeks plus a one-hour securely administered written final examination. Homework beyond the approved plan and idle login time are excluded.

Teacher-led, primarily asynchronous delivery

COLA provides teacher-led, primarily asynchronous online instruction through Google Classroom. Students receive sequenced lessons, teacher direction, guided activities, feedback, individual support and opportunities for conferences or oral verification. Students may complete assigned asynchronous work flexibly within communicated weekly timelines.

Instruction and interaction

Short teacher-recorded mini-lessons are used when they add instructional value. Other lessons may use teacher-directed slides, written instruction, modelled examples, guided practice and feedback. Individual conferences, office hours or live support are arranged when needed; there is no recurring full-day or mandatory daily live class.

Technology and access

Students need a browser-capable computer, reliable internet, a camera and microphone when required, a verified Google account, and document or PDF tools. Confirmed learners receive private individual access; no public Classroom code or shared password is published.

Assessment, attendance and examinations

Final-mark calculation

For both courses: 65% coursework, 20% securely administered written final examination, and 15% attendance and participation. After authorization, a minimum final mark of 50% is required to earn the credit.

Attendance definition

Attendance is based on documented meaningful participation in scheduled learning, not login alone. Evidence may include completion of posted instruction, submissions, discussions, individual conferences, oral checkpoints, learning logs, feedback and revision, and substantive teacher communication.

Absences and recovery

Excused absences do not automatically reduce the attendance/participation mark. The teacher considers available evidence and provides reasonable recovery opportunities while preserving instructional time and valid achievement evidence.

Secure examinations

Written final examinations use identity verification, controlled access, academic-integrity procedures, process and version evidence, and conferences or oral verification where appropriate. Accommodations are provided without lowering curriculum expectations.

Admission, guidance and accommodations

Admission

Admission requires a completed application, identity and contact verification, guardian consent for minors, course selection, technology and accessibility review, and signed enrolment terms. Public website inquiries are not enrolment.

ENL1W diagnostic

Every learner completes the full Ontario Grade 9 de-streamed English expectations. Individual diagnostics identify instructional starting points, literacy supports, accommodations, appropriate scaffolding and opening-unit goals.

Guidance

Course and pathway guidance considers the learner's goals, prior evidence, Ontario graduation requirements and the verified responsibility for the learner's diploma record.

Accommodations

Supports may include chunked instructions, checklists, flexible response formats, additional processing time, scheduled breaks, staged deadlines and individual check-ins. Accommodations do not lower curriculum expectations.

Records, privacy and reporting

COLA does not automatically hold or establish an original Ontario Student Record merely because a learner takes one supplementary course. For a student concurrently enrolled at another Ontario school, COLA will securely provide the required report card and course-result information to the verified OSR-holding school. For a homeschooled learner with no verified OSR holder, COLA will maintain the required course-level record and establish the applicable Ontario Student Transcript arrangement, or follow other written Ministry direction, before reporting an inspected credit.

COLA will not claim that an OSR or transcript holder exists unless verified. Student information remains confidential. Names, birth dates, addresses, countries, diagnoses and medical information are not public. No credit result is reported before authorization and the required records arrangements.

Late and missed work

The teacher contacts the learner promptly, identifies barriers, records the reason where known and sets a reasonable revised timeline. Supports may include chunking, staged deadlines, additional processing time, accessible formats, additional teaching and a recovery plan. When evidence remains insufficient after intervention, the grade reflects demonstrated achievement and no credit is granted without sufficient valid evidence.
